EDUCATION & EMPOWERMENT
Older adulthood comes with distinctive circumstances that are new to us. Increased life expectancy due to medical advancements has resulted in nearly doubled rates of complex comorbidity (more than 4 diseases) and polypharmacy (more than 5 medications) in the past 20 years. Chronic illness is the leading cause of death in older adults and proactive and informed decision-making is the best approach to reduce hospitalization, suffering, financial loss, facility placement, family stress, or the risk of not having your wishes respected. End-of-life education, resource navigation, options counseling, and advanced directive planning are pivotal to ensuring preparation, confidence, acceptance, autonomy, peace of mind, and quality of life in older adulthood.
Family and Caregiver support
Nearly 1 in 4 Americans is a family caregiver and 1 in 3 caregivers are themselves 65 years or older. The majority report significant negative impacts on their physical, financial, social, and/or emotional health. Counseling and education can help empower families and caregivers, as there are unique concerns related to navigating chronic illness and the characteristics and progression of diseases such as cancers, heart disease, Alzheimer's/dementia, Parkinson's, and ALS. Caregivers need all the support they can get to maintain safety, manage symptom burden, reduce feelings of helplessness, and improve communication, confidence, and dignity for themselves and their loved ones.
IMPROVED QUALITY OF LIFE
1 in 5 older adults experience mental health concerns that are not a normal part of aging. Many of these problems appear later in life regardless of having no prior history. Depression is the most prevalent mental health problem in older adults, but is both under-diagnosed and under-treated. Symptoms are overlooked because they occur with other health complications and are often less noticeable than in other populations. But untreated mental health concerns can lead to declined physical functioning, cognitive impairment, substance abuse, and increased mortality. Additionally, older adults are highly vulnerable to abuse, neglect, and exploitation, and suicide risk is highest among seniors. Targeted counseling and therapy services can intervene to help improve outcomes, safety, and overall quality of life for older adults.
Medicare Billing
Mental health services for older adults are increasingly expensive and difficult to access. Many professionals refuse to bill Medicare or Medicaid insurance and require clients to pay out of pocket for therapy services. Campfire Counseling aims to address this by bringing quality mental health care to seniors under their existing Medicaid, Medicare, or private insurance benefits.
